Shimano Tiagra Reels are widely accepted as the ultimate offshore reels by captains worldwide because of their durability and superb performance against the biggest and baddest fish in the ocean. With the introduction of the newer Shimano Tiagra A series of reels, an improved ratcheting lever drag was introduced, allowing for more precise drag adjustments along with an improved 2-speed gearing system. Shimano Tiagra A Series Reels (Tiagra 12 and Tiagra 16 excluded) received an offset ergonomic power grip that gives anglers more leverage.
For over 20 years now Shimano has been leading the way in the offshore, lever drag trolling market. Shimano has listened to Anglers and Captains world wide and developed a series of lever drag reels for trolling and live bait applications that are second to none. Shimano Tiagra fishing reels can be found the world over from Africa to Mexico, and Australia to North Carolina. Tiagra reels are standard equipment on the world’s finest yachts. These big game saltwater reels have proven their durability and ease of service from day 1. With over 25,000 reels in service since inception, these reels are built saltwater tough.
Shimano’s impeccable gearing system is both smooth and lockup solid at the same time. The drag range on the Tiagra’s is a thing of beauty and the ability to play these reels from only a few pounds of drag above free spool to 70lbs.+ at full allows anglers targeting trophy game fish the control to present lures and baits under optimal conditions ensuring successful hookups and captures. This might all sound like lip service but it makes a difference. When you’re 200 miles offshore and you have that trophy fish on the line, you need confidence in your fishing gear, and the Shimano Tiagra has proven itself time and time again that it is up the task.
Melton International Tackle offers a full range of Shimano Tiagra big game reels for all fishing applications. For stand up fishing, we recommend a Tiagra 30A or Tiagra 50A. You get a lighter reel with the Tiagra 30 and a lot of maneuverability, but the Tiagra 50 will give you an easier fight if a big fish shows up. For heavier tackle for use in a rod holder or fighting chair, then go with the Tiagra 50WA and up. These can take the beating that a large blue or black Marlin will give. The Shimano Tiagra 80WA can take on almost all fish in the sea, whether it is Marlin, Tuna, or huge sharks.
The reason why you would want to choose a Tiagra 130 over a Tiagra 80 is for the extra power and ability to use heavier tackle to reel in the fish faster. This especially important for Tuna so that they don’t burn themselves in a long fight. The TI130As are also great for tournaments, where you need all the advantages you can get. If you’re having trouble deciding between a WA or LRSA model, the Long Range Special models have a steeper drag curve. They cost a bit more than the WA models but they tend to be more popular due to their more aggressive drag system. In addition to the steeper drag curve, the Shimano Tiagra 30WLRSA also has a larger line capacity over the 30A, and the Shimano Tiagra 50WLRSA has a higher drag than the 50WA.
Specs & Features
- AR-B (Anti-Rust Bearing) stainless steel ball bearings are specially treated to drastically increase the corrosion resistance of the bearing. These bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings in high salinity environments.
- The HAGANE Body is made of highly rigid aluminium or magnesium. This increases stiffness and impact resistance, and helps to stop the flexing of the body. The result is a rock-solid housing and support for the moving internal gearing and greater efficiency throughout the reel.
- Cross Carbon Drag material provides a wider range of drag settings and gives the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
